VIA686 AC97 sound configuration

Libranet 2.0 detected the VIA696 chip then proceeded to ask me which
modules to install. So I selected the via82C_audio and nothing
else. When I play /usr/share/sounds/phone.wav I hear the phone ringing,
but it never stops. xmms won't play either. Pushing play does nothing. I
do have all of the mixer settings up at least half way.

I reached this point on Libranet 1.9.1 after installing and compiling
alsa myself. I put off debugging it until I tried 2.0. So, here I am,
and sound still doesn't work.

I can play CD's. I'm not sure if there is a separate path from the CDROM
to the speakers on the laptop.

This is a HP zt1180 laptop and has the VIA southbridge chip.

Any ideas as to how to debug this? It seems like I am REAL close, but
not quite there.

Thanks,
Steve
