I wasn't very clear in my last post.  The File Manager (super user mode) 
works exactly like this.  I don't know if you use KDE or not, but if you do, 
it is in the System menu.  In fact, in KDE you can prefix any command with 
kdesu (for example:  kdesu xcdroast) and whatever you launch will present you 
a graphical dialog box prompting you for your root user password.  Create a 
menu item or alter any menu item you wish in this way and you will be running 
the way you want to.
