What do you use to dial up? Pon, kppp ?. Check your modem init string.
Try adding L0 to set the volume off or M0 to turn off the speaker
(that's a zero) to the string. My modem string is AT&FS95=47W2. This
displays the correct connection speed and not the actual port speed. For
instance my port is set to 57600 but my present actual connect speed is
45333. If this works for you (may cause problems) then add the L0 or M0
or both. Play with it.
