kernel recompile fails

I was trying to recompile my kernel (2.4.10) and got this message while
doing a "make bzImage" (I wasn't able to use the xadminmenu tool).

drivers/char/char.o(.data+0x46b4): undefined reference to `local symbols
in discarded section .text.exit'
drivers/usb/usbdrv.o(.data+0x234): undefined reference to `local symbols
in discarded section .text.exit'
drivers/usb/usbdrv.o(.data+0x314): undefined reference to `local symbols
in discarded section .text.exit'
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1

any clues as to what I can do to fix the problem?
