You may want to have a look at the file /var/log/dmesg
There should be information about which SCSI devices were detected
during boot-up.

Is it possible that you mistakenly selected one of the options as a
module rather than compiled in.  (selection SHOULD shown by * rather
than M which would mean you had selected as a module)
