Re Dennis' problem with X: I saw this when I tried to convince
my computer it really was a USB mouse plugged into a USB port.
I'd suggest he check how the mouse is connected - serial, PS/2, USB,
etc., and let us know so we can advise re the mouse settings.
And a reinstall is probably a good idea. Any new (to you) OS is a bit
confusing the first time through.
