I agree that there is fluff as part of the base systems of many
distrubutions but that doesn't mean that these programs are running and
therefore using memory or cpu cycles.  The only resource being used is
space on the HD.

If you have something running on boot that you don't need, stop the
process and uninstall the program thus reducing the use of resources.
