Ok, that sort of narrows it down to lilo or the kernel on the hard
drive. You should have a copy of the kernel in /usr/scr...

Two options: edit the lilo.conf file so the lilo boot loader is placed
on a floppy and boot from said floppy or maybe the kernel image on the
hard drive is somehow corrupted. You could rename the current unbootable
image and copy over the one /usr/src... again (just in case your current
copy is sitting on a bad block or something), run lilo to update things
and try a boot of the harddrive again.

We know your kernel works so something's lost in the boot process on the
hard drive. It looks more like a kernel problem than a lilo one. When
you did the compile did you copy over the /usr/src/System.map to
/boot/System.map-2.4.17.

Did you use adminmenu to compile and does it run lilo? I've never used
it to compile.
